The eighth annual San Francisco Theater Festival, a free, fun, one-day extravaganza of over 100 shows on 12 stages will be held on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, featuring a world premier performance of the Keith Moon Project’s “Keith Moon – The Real Me” about his rise, his struggles and his genius.
Also featured are 12 shows for children under the age of 12 including Judy & Punchy, Nancy Gold, Thomas John and Fred Anderson.
The festival will take place at the Fort Mason Center on Marina Blvd. at Buchannan St.
This unique festival, a celebration of local theater attended by more than 10,000 enthusiastic theatergoers each year, has become an important showcase for theater groups and performers, as well as one of the Bay Area’s most popular one-day free summer events. The Festival program consists of short performances of 30 minutes or less at nine indoor and five outdoor stages.
All types of theater are presented, including drama, comedy, one-acts, excerpts, great scenes, Commedia Dell’arte, musical theater, solo performers, improv, Shakespeare, original works, and terrific children’s shows.
New weekend additions to the festival include a series of preview performances presented at venues around the city on Saturdays in July and Aug. 6th. Those venues include: Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (2868 Mission St), Boxcar Theatre (125A Hyde St), Café Royale (800 Post St), and the African-American Art & Culture Complex (762 Fulton St).
The festival’s 100+ performers include: Artis Mundi, BATS Improv, Big City Improv, Bindlestiff Studios, Blue Blanket, Caila Lipovsky, Chaucer Theatre, Creatures of Impulse, Enzo Lombard, Fred Anderson, Indigenous Chaos, Jovelyn Richards, Julia Jackson, Libby Skala, Lower Bottom Playaz, Naatak, Nicole Maxali, No Nude Men, Pi, PianoFight, Planet Booty, Playground, SF Recovery Theatre, Souletry, Stagebridge, and many others.
The festival shows cover the gamut of subjects and settings: A comedy about social network sites, Seven Card Stud with Seven Manangs telling funny and moving stories of Filipino-Americans, Caila Lipovsky’s Robot Therapy & Destitute Magicians, PianoFight’s female-driven improv and a comedy telling the real story of how the fiancial crisis really happened.
One of the great additions this year is the participation of 7 trans-border shows from Mexico including for from Matando Musas’s Monologue Union, Tu Teatro, IRIS and Vivian Sanchez. There is something for everyone at the SF Theater Festival.
“By working together, the San Francisco Bay Area’s theater community has created the largest theater event of the year. Our objective is to showcase exciting performers and promote theatergoing and each year the performances are better and better,” said executive producer Kelli McCusker.
